Volunteer and Make a Difference
Volunteering for Yee Hong is a fulfilling and rewarding experience. There are various volunteer
opportunities in different departments of the four Yee Hong Centres.
Whether to serve our seniors directly or help in office administration, you will find an opportunity that best matches your interests and skills.
Service Volunteers at Yee Hong
Our volunteers embrace the seven values of Yee Hong: Respect, Compassion, Commitment, Excellence, Teamwork, Integrity and Accountability.
Whether they are running programs for seniors, paying them a visit, delivering meals, transporting seniors or doing office work,
their service helps our seniors enjoy a more fulfilling life and helps make Yee Hong a world leader in the provision of quality services
for seniors from the healthy to the very frail. Yee Hong has benefited from the contribution of over 1,000 service volunteers each year.
Between 1995 and 2010, they contributed over 1,000,000 hours of service in various departments of the Yee Hong Centres.
Training and Volunteer Development
Yee Hong strives to maintain a pool of well-trained, dependable and motivated volunteers. All new service volunteers are given pre-placement
orientation in which they get to know the history and structure of the organization, its programs and services, physical and emotional
challenges facing seniors, skills in communicating and working with seniors, etc. Volunteers will continue to receive support through
on-going training, feedback and supervision from the departments they are assigned to.
Training such as goal setting, social skills, time management and emotional management is also offered to help
volunteers in their personal growth. Every now and then, social gathering, outings and other activities are organized
to enhance team spirit and to promote staff-volunteer relationship.
Getting Started
To register as a Yee Hong volunteer, you must submit a completed Volunteer Application Form, Confidentiality Form,
and where applicable, the TB Test Form. Some assignments also require vulnerable sector screening. A commitment of at least
three months is required for all volunteers except students volunteering in the summer. Some assignments such
as friendly visiting would require longer commitment. We will arrange a placement for you based on your expressed
interests, learning objectives and time availability. The need for and supply of volunteers fluctuates seasonally and
it might take some time before a suitable placement can be found for you.
The department to which you are assigned will give you a workplace orientation and prepare you for your duties. This is on top of the
pre-placement orientation mentioned above. There is no need to worry that you do not have all the knowledge and skills needed to perform
certain duties. We have assessed you and believe that you have the potential and motivation to learn. People differ in the length of time
they take to break into a job. Your supervisor, as well as other staff and fellow volunteers, will give you support to carry out the duty
and enhance the skills over time.
Volunteer Recognition
Every effort is made to ensure that volunteer achievements and contributions are recognized.
Volunteer Recognition Week is held annually to express the organization’s appreciation to all volunteers.
In addition, various departments organize their own appreciation activities for their volunteers.
