Yee Hong Makes Us Smile

Yeung Chui-Wan, Yee Hong Centre Resident
“The Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care is an ideal place for seniors in need of long-term care. Ever since I started living at Yee Hong, I have felt that this is my home and the nurses are like my family.

This year, my illness took a turn and became worse. The nurses took care of me like a mother would take care of her child. They often came by just to see if I had slept well or how I was feeling. Such tenderness, understanding and dedication are very precious to me. No money in the world can buy such excellent care. Sometimes, even my family feels that they can’t compete with the Yee Hong staff.”

Dr. Shahnaz Khan, M.D., Son of Yee Hong Centre Resident
“I can only relate our happy experiences with the Yee Hong Ho Lai Oi Wan Centre in Markham where my mother has been a resident since May 2003. It is like a home away from home for my mother who is so happily settled in her new surroundings. The staff members, especially the nurses and caregivers, are so courteous, caring and compassionate to their residents. It is my good fortune that my mother gets the best care, love and attention from the staff, 24 hours a day. There is a special wing for South Asian residents staffed by Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi speaking staff members who understand the needs of the residents. It is not an easy decision to make to put my mother in a nursing home, but thanks to Yee Hong and its well trained staff, I don’t have to worry about her. I am glad that I have made the right choice. The greatest happiness I get is when I see my mother so happy and content there.”

Tsui Sui-Ngan, Client of the Adult Day Program
“After my heart surgery, mobility became difficult. The Adult Day Program at Yee Hong has allowed me to regain my strength and relieve my boredom. My family members no longer worry about me and I am very happy that there are so many other seniors I can talk to. One of the workers, Ms. Leung, always remembers what I like to eat and makes sure my meals are up to my liking. She even knows I like bean curd dessert and because I cannot have high sugar food, she would get me one that is sugar-free. Coming to the Adult Day Program is like coming home. We’re like a family.”

Allen Chan, Client of the Post-Stroke Day Program for Younger Survivors
“I had a stroke in 2003 which left me paralyzed. I was 38 years old then. In Yee Hong’s Post-Stroke Day Program for Younger Survivors, I meet other younger stroke survivors and we support and encourage each other. The training and activities engage our brain and keep our body and mind active. This is the first and only Chinese program in the GTA for stroke survivors under the age of 65. I am grateful for this Program which enables younger stroke survivors like me to start a new life.”

Mr. & Mrs. Tsui, Clients of the Client Intervention and Assistance Program
“Life was very tough when we first immigrated to Canada. We were very fortunate that the doctor at Yee Hong referred us to a social worker – Mrs. Esther Mui. She helped us apply for senior housing and looked after our needs, such as tax filing. What she has done for us is totally above and beyond what she’s required. Though she is very busy, she is still very kind and patient and takes time out of her busy schedule to visit us. Words are not enough to express our gratitude. We are really appreciative and grateful for Yee Hong and all the work Mrs. Mui has done for us over the past 10 years”.

Stephen and Alice Hong, Yee Hong Garden Terrace Residents
“Life is very enjoyable at the beautiful complex. Our neighbours are mostly Chinese who share a common language and we care for one another. The staff on site are very nice. They provide emergency response services and organize a variety of activities. Because my legs are weakening, I need my wife to take care of me. Through staff referral, I attend the Adult Day Program at the Yee Hong Centre-Scarborough McNicoll two times per week so that my wife can run errands and meet friends. We both feel very happy and fortunate that we live at Yee Hong Garden Terrace. Yee Hong provides the best senior housing and services in Canada. As a non-profit organization, Yee Hong needs the help of the community. Please give generously to support Yee Hong’s services so that more seniors can enjoy the best care.”
