Rajalakshmi Ramaswami
Rajalakshmi was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 26 years ago and has been confined to a wheelchair for more than nine years. She and husband Bangalore celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 2005. After retiring as a professor at the University of Toronto for 30 years, Bangalore used to take care of his wife at home. But one day, he strained his back so seriously that he was sent to an emergency room. It was then that the family decided it was best for Rajalakshmi to stay at a long term care facility. A few years ago, Rajalakshmi was admitted into the Yee Hong Ho Lai Oi Wan Centre in Markham.
Being a doting husband, Bangalore visits his wife every day from his Scarborough home which he shares with his son. The couple enjoys strolling on the premises and attending occasional music performances by volunteers. They are very impressed with the staff at Yee Hong who understands their cultural needs.
“My wife receives excellent care at the South Asian Wing of the Centre. We never have to worry about problems relating to customs and traditions. There are South Asian staff among the nurses as well as activity and support staff. Yee Hong also arranges weekly pastoral support and regular visits to temples. Our major festivals are always recognized and celebrated. Rajalakshmi feels more at home than at a nursing home,” says Bangalore. |
